It was getting late. He would miss the bus. The computer kept asking the twenty thousand formality questions before logging him out. The formalities got over, and he switched the monitor off.
A dash to the elevator, he ran to find it full. There was no way he was going to wait till it came again. He dashed down the staircase at a frantic pace! On reaching the entrance, and the typical card swipe, he was let out, just to see the bus pass by. A desperate wave of the hands for a motorcycle lift, which he took to the next stop of the bus, and rushed into it. A ticket to Narayanapura, and he stood on the footboard, as the bus darted off.
6:00 pm
He was late, and he knew it too. Hurried thoughts, adrenaline all pumped up, and in five minutes time he was at the Ratha Mandir signal. He paced upon and down about the signal, appreciating his amazing sense of time management. It was no mean task to come from Srinagar complex to Narayanapura in an hour and 35 minutes. It took him a bus, and a walk pacing up a long street to reach here. A distance which took you atleast one and a half hours, and needed perfect planning to execute the travel.
Now, it was time to stay laidback and wait. He waited as everyday, before proceeding home, as the last ten minutes of his journey home were always the most joyous ones. As he was watching, she came from amidst the busy roads, adorned in a green churidhar, pink umbrella in hand, the beautiful face emerging from underneath the huge banyan tree. For a second, the street sounds seemed muted. He was experiencing joy at the smile on the face. He had realised the worth of all the day's work in that one smile of hers. Pushpa had been his childhood friend, they had lived in the same colony for the last 22 years, and the experience had turned into love for him. He had been in love with her for more than 10 years, but had not mustered enough courage to tell her. He let time take its course. For him, the journey back home with her was far more enough to make his day's worth! As she reached him, she said, "Hi Karthik", to which he mustered a slow reply, "Hi, Pushpa", and they left home!
